Flipping through the channels one day, I landed on Pete Sampras who was about to start a match. I'm not a big tennis fan, but I used to see him practice at UCLA (my alma mater)…and, of course, he’s one of the greatest ever, so I decided to watch a few moments…
What happened next changed my life, my health and my weight for good!
As Pete was walking on the court, I thought to myself how it is time to get in shape. He had those strong arms and legs and, obviously, no belly. The TV announcer introduced Pete by saying that he was 30yrs. old (a little younger than me), 6’1” (huh, exactly my height) and weighing – drumroll – 181lbs. ONE-HUNDRED-AND-EIGHTY-ONE POUNDS. At the time, I weighed 214lbs. and it hit me like a bolt of lightning:
"I’m fat!!!"
I weighed thirty-three pounds more than Pete...without his muscles! Now, I wasn’t delusional before. I knew I had a little bit of a belly…but that was all I had. You know the body type – skinny arms, skinny legs, potbelly. Attractive, I know. But, in my mind, I never had a weight challenge…just a fitness one. With all those muscles, I was sure Mr. Sampras carried my weight at least…and all I needed to do was to work out and my stomach would be flat in no time.
But when I learned Pete’s actual weight that day, it became crystal clear that I not only moved too little…I also ate too much. If you’re reading this, and you’re experiencing a similar shock, what comes next will transform your life…and its not what you think.
5 nudges!
I knew what I was doing wrong. I was eating too much food in too few meals. I did not exercise enough. I knew I had to change that. Obviously. What I did not know was that I did NOT need a diet…I needed a simple nudge in the form of an alarm. Actually, I needed five daily alarms.
Now, the diet industry gives you two options: Either the program makes a lot of sense health wise, but requires you to structure your daily life around preparing the skinless chicken breast with broccoli al dente – or the program is easy and convenient, but ultimately detrimental to your health. " Just take one of these appetite suppressant pills in the morning and…" NO, NO, NO, NO, NO!!!
I needed something that works with the way I live…and I’m busy. Moreover, I intend to stay busy. As for taking a “weight loss supplement”? Out of the question. So much for every "diet plan" I had come across.
But, what if I could simply remember to eat 5 healthy meals/snacks per day, every day. Even better, what if I did not have to remember? What if I can make weight management automatic...and, in the process, completely retrain my body to eat healthy?
In 2001, I found my answer in a sport watch with 5 alarms, a pocket nutrition guide and a table created on a word processor…ah, the good old days! And, after a quick set up, I found immediate and lasting success!
The easiest "diet" in the world!
Gone were both the hunger pangs...and the bloated feelings. Immediately. Gone was the sluggishness that made me not want to exercise. Immediately. And, within 6 months, gone was the belly that had been a staple of my physique since adolescence!
Now, I’m no Pete Sampras, but today, in 2007, the potbelly is still gone and I've never again weighed more than 190lbs!
